📖 Read: Three young members, three opinions أقرأ

A youth magazine asked three teenagers why they belong to an association.

👦
Ethan, 15, MontrealEvery winter, I go out with a shovel and clear the snow from the driveways of elderly neighbours. I think that helping old people is the best opportunity to learn patience. They tell me fantastic stories, too!
👧
Ons, 14, GabèsI belong to a charity that buys goats and sheep for poor families in the countryside. The animals give milk, so the families have a small income. In my opinion, giving people a way to earn money is better than giving them money once.
🧒
Khalil, 15, TunisMy mission in the “Smile Together” association is to collect walking sticks, wheelchairs and even a stair lift for disabled people. I saw first hand how a simple wheelchair changed my aunt’s life. I believe that every town needs a centre like ours.

The journalist asked: “Should every pupil volunteer?” Ethan said, “I think so.” Ons answered, “I don’t think so – it must be a free choice, not an obligation.” What’s your opinion?

🧩 Grammar القواعد

To give your opinion, start with:

  • I think (that) + clause: I think that charities are useful.
  • I believe (that) + clause: I believe that every town needs a centre.
  • In my opinion, + clause: In my opinion, volunteering should be a free choice.

To answer a question quickly: I think so. (= yes) / I don’t think so. (= no). Be careful: we say I don’t think it’s fair, not I think it isn’t fair (both are possible, but the first is more natural).

للتعبير عن الرأي: I think that / I believe that / In my opinion + جملة. وللإجابة باختصار: I think so (أظنّ ذلك) أو I don’t think so (لا أظنّ ذلك).

A model text to compare with (after writing mine)

Amel Haddad was born in 1975 in Kef. After school, she studied nursing in Tunis and worked in a big hospital. There she saw first hand that many elderly people lived alone. In 2001 she founded a charity called “Our Grandparents”. With her friends, she collected walking sticks and wheelchairs for old people who couldn’t afford them. In 2015 she opened a day centre where the elderly can eat, talk and play cards. Today, her association has 200 volunteers across the region. In my opinion, Amel is a real heroine because she gives her time to others. I believe that we should all follow her example.

One good example among many: compare, don’t copy.
